Bitter Christmas: Special Preview of the 60th KVIFF

Wednesday, 1 July 2026, 19:30
Ends: Wednesday, 1 July 2026, 21:21
Městské divadlo Mariánské Lázně

The 60th KVIFF begins with an unusual prelude: before the festival venues light up in Karlovy Vary, cinema returns to Mariánské Lázně. The first films of the newly founded showcase premiered here in 1946; Mariánské Lázně was its sole host in 1947 and 1948, and in 1949 the programme was again shared by both spa towns.

The special screening presents Pedro Almodóvar's latest film, Bitter Christmas. The intimate drama unfolds across two storylines, following acclaimed screenwriter and director Raúl and advertising director Elsa, who tries to bury her grief after her mother's death in work. The film asks where artistic inspiration ends and the exploitation of loved ones begins.

A festival delegation will introduce the screening, Marek Eben will host, and a welcome drink is served before the film. Running time is 111 minutes and admission costs CZK 140. Read more from KVIFF and buy tickets through the theatre.
