Roman Franta – Outside / Inside
The exhibition presents the work of Czech painter Roman Franta (born 1962), one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Czech figurative painting. He first came to wider public attention with a series of insect paintings, for which he was nominated for the Jindřich Chalupecký Award. From the late 1990s he taught as associate professor at the Academy of Fine Arts; he currently passes on his experience at the Art & Design Institute.
The selective retrospective Outside / Inside loosely follows the evolution of Franta's painterly language over the past thirty years. His works are grounded in reality yet oscillate between hyperrealist tendencies and a lapidary brushstroke – the contrast between precise detail and gestural shorthand is characteristic of his style. He approaches human relationships, faces, literary references, and art-historical allusions with ironic detachment, where irony serves as a means of reflection rather than escape.
The exhibition includes an accompanying event: 24 May 2026 at 14:30, a guided tour with the artist as part of an Open Day (free admission).
