14 Eight-Thousanders in the Eastern Ore Mountains
Tourist Information Altenberg · Bahnhof 1, 01773 Altenberg, Deutschland
14 Eight-Thousanders in the Eastern Ore Mountains is a long summit challenge for strong legs and a taste for collecting peaks. These local “eight-thousanders” are not Himalayan metres but decimetres: the route links fourteen summits above 8000 dm around Altenberg, Zinnwald, Rehefeld, Holzhau, and Schellerhau. The reward is a full Ore Mountains circuit with forests, ridge sections, views towards Bohemia, stamps to collect, and a finisher T-shirt at the end.
Route
The main loop starts and finishes at Altenberg railway station. It takes in Geisingberg, Traugotthöhe, Fuchshübel, Scharspitze, BIWAK-Kuppe, both Lugstein summits, Wüste Höhe, Hemmschuh, Schickelshöhe, Steinkuppe, Kannelberg/Drachenkopf, Stephanshöhe, and Pöbelknochen. The official route is available as a map with GPX, KML, and FIT downloads.

Practical information
Expect a very long day out with a mix of asphalt, gravel, forest roads, and narrow paths. Wear sturdy footwear, carry rain protection, first aid, plenty of food and water, and keep offline navigation ready on the ridges. Respect forest closures, forestry work, wildlife, and other trail users. Dogs are allowed, but the distance and climbing make water planning and exit options important.
