Chlum Svaté Máří Provostry Complex
Areál probošství Chlum Svaté Máří · Náměstí J. W. Goetheho 1/1, 357 09 Chlum Svaté Máří
The provostry complex at Chlum Svaté Máří, also known locally and internationally as Maria Kulm, is one of the major Marian pilgrimage sites in Bohemia and one of the most complete Baroque ensembles in the Karlovy Vary Region. The hill above the village has been linked since the Middle Ages with a legend of a miraculous Gothic statue of the seated Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, found in a hazel bush and unwilling to be carried elsewhere.
A first pilgrimage church stood here around 1400. Between 1687 and 1728 it was rebuilt into its present Baroque form to designs associated with the workshop of Kryštof Dientzenhofer. The complex is administered by the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star.
In the second half of the 18th century, Maria Kulm was one of the most visited pilgrimage places in the Kingdom of Bohemia. After the Second World War and the displacement of the German-speaking population, the site declined and was used as accommodation and as a store for church art. After 1989 the order returned and began a systematic restoration. In 2023 the complex was declared a national cultural monument.
What visitors can see
The site is divided into two free visitor circuits:
The pilgrimage circuit is open daily from 9:00 to 16:00. It includes the pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St Mary Magdalene with eleven altars, the Chapel of Grace with the original Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary, covered ambulatories with Stations of the Cross and the historic gardens. The route also leads to a chapel with a spring, long revered by pilgrims.
The museum circuit follows the story of the pilgrimage site from the Middle Ages to the present through historical displays, precious sacred objects and a multimedia installation. Opening times vary by season:
- January-March: pre-booked groups only
- April and October-December: Friday-Sunday, 11:00-16:00
- May-September: Thursday-Sunday, 11:00-16:00
Guided tours for groups can be arranged in advance by e-mail at info@mariakulm.eu.
Architecture and interiors
The church is a vaulted single-nave building with two towers. Inside are eleven altars with paintings and sculpture on biblical themes. On the northern side, a three-wing provostry building connects to the ambulatories, creating a compact Baroque ensemble that feels both monumental and intimate.
Practical information
The complex is freely accessible and both circuits have free admission. Allow about 1.5 hours for a visit. The souvenir shop in the provostry accepts cash only, in CZK or EUR. A public Mass is held every Sunday at 11:00. Parking is available directly on Náměstí J. W. Goetheho in front of the church.
