Basalt Fan on Hirtstein
Hirtstein · Am Hirtstein 3, 09496 Marienberg, OT Satzung, Německo
The basalt fan on Hirtstein is one of those places where geology needs little explanation. In a disused quarry, dark columns spread out like an enormous palm frond, reaching roughly 15 metres in height. The outcrop formed from magma that never reached the surface around 24 million years ago; it cooled underground and fractured into regular columns. Hirtstein is now recognised as one of Germany's National Geosites.
What to see
You can enter the secured quarry and inspect the fan at close range. On the western side, look for the second outcrop known as the Riesentreppe, or Giant Staircase, formed by massive hexagonal basalt columns. An information panel explains why the columns point in different directions.
At 889.8 metres, Hirtstein also offers wide views in clear weather towards Fichtelberg, Klínovec, Bärenstein, Pöhlberg and Scheibenberg. It works best as a memorable short stop on a ridge walk or cross-border Ore Mountains day rather than as an all-day attraction.
Practical information
This is an outdoor geosite without fixed visiting hours. Railings secure the former quarry, but the ground can be rocky, wet or icy in winter; sturdy footwear and care near the exposed rock faces are sensible. The summit is open to wind, and conditions can change quickly.
Directions and links
By car, follow the B174 from Marienberg towards Reitzenhain, take the S218 to Satzung and continue along Hirtsteinweg to the car park. Bus 431 serves Satzung/Hirtsteinauffahrt, followed by a walk to the summit. The nearby Hirtsteinbaude mountain inn is a useful landmark and refreshment stop.
