Former Monastery and Světce Castle Ruins
Bývalý klášter a zřícenina zámku Světce · Světce, 347 01 Tachov
The former monastery and castle ruins in Světce lie in the hamlet of Světce west of Tachov, right next to the well-known riding hall. The place feels very different from the restored national cultural monument beside it: quieter, more overgrown and more romantic, with wall fragments in which older sacred history meets the unfinished aristocratic dream of the Windischgrätz family.
The origins of the site reach back to the Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and to a Minim monastery built in Světce in the 17th century. After the monastery was dissolved under Joseph II, the complex passed into the hands of the Windischgrätz family. In the mid-19th century, Prince Alfred I Windischgrätz attempted to turn the former monastic complex into a grand family residence. The conversion, however, remained unfinished. After the death of its initiator the project stopped, and parts of the former church and castle gradually became a ruin.
What you'll see
The most striking feature is the contrast of the setting. On one side stands the restored Světce Riding Hall, a representative and carefully renewed building. Only a short distance away are the remains of the former monastery and castle conversion, showing how ambitious the whole Světce complex was meant to be. Surviving masonry, fragments of window openings and an irregular ground plan give the place the character of a romantic ruin rather than a conventional visitor attraction.
A walk here combines well with the route from Tachov along Knížecí alej, with a visit to the riding hall or with the climb onto the Vysoká - Světce nature trail. The site is best suited to visitors who like ruins, forgotten building layers and atmospheric places, not to those expecting a standard interior tour.
Practical information
The ruin has no regular ticket office and no classic visitor regime. Move considerately and respect the current condition of the structure, as the monument survives in varying states of preservation. The easiest landmark is the Světce Riding Hall; from there the former monastery and castle ruins are only a short walk away.
