Climbing at Svatošské Rocks
Svatošské skály · Svatošské skály, 357 31 Loket
Climbing at Svatošské Rocks adds a focused sport layer to one of the classic excursion sites between Karlovy Vary and Loket. The rocks stand on the left bank of the Ohře River inside the Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area and the Svatošské skály national nature monument. For climbers, the area is a set of granite towers and walls roughly 10-50 metres high; the city information centre describes eight main formations linked to the legend of the petrified wedding party, and the ČHS profile also lists the separate Samotář tower.
Climbing Character
The Czech Mountaineering Association describes the area as vertical, often highly structured granite with good climbing. Expect edges, rounded cracks, ledges and friction climbing. Most routes have fixed protection, and metal nuts are permitted; before going, check the current route, sector and area-manager information on the ČHS sector profile.
Admission
The rocks are not a paid attraction or an organised climbing service. Access to the area is free, but climbing is at your own risk, with your own equipment and with respect for nature-protection rules.
Practical Information
According to ČHS, climbing is allowed year-round except on the Svatoš tower. New first ascents are prohibited, descents must be by abseil, and bivouacking, damaging vegetation, winter climbing equipment and protection that damages the rock are not allowed. The legal protection rules for the national nature monument also tie climbing to designated climbing terrain, so always check current ČHS information and any local restrictions before climbing. A helmet, an experienced partner and independent belaying skills are a sensible minimum here.
Directions and Sources
The usual approach is on foot or by bike along the Ohře valley from Doubí, Loket or Cihelny; cars are not normally taken directly to the rocks. For planning, use Karlovy Vary - Mountain Climbing, the ČHS Svatošské skály profile and the protected-area context in ISOP/AOPK.
