Via Ferrata Hněvín
Ferrata Hněvín · Hradní 577, 434 01 Most
Via Ferrata Hněvín climbs the rock face directly below medieval Hněvín Castle, the landmark above Most. It is one of the most varied urban via ferrata stops in north-west Bohemia: short enough for a half-day visit, but with routes ranging from family-friendly climbing to steep lines for confident climbers.
The setting adds a little drama. The rock sits below the castle and above the city, with views towards Lake Most and the Ore Mountains foothills. Inside the massif is a cave used during the Second World War as an air-raid shelter for local civilians.
Routes
Seven one-way routes lead from the old waterworks area towards the cave below the castle. The main protected section climbs about 38 m of height over roughly 75 m of secured route.
| Route | Grade | Character |
|---|---|---|
| White | A/B | gentle line for beginners and families |
| Orange | B | easy-progressing climbing |
| Brown | C | moderate climbing |
| Green | C | moderate climbing |
| Pink | C | moderate climbing |
| Red | D | demanding route for experienced climbers |
| Blue | E | hardest line, only for advanced climbers |
Descents use steps or an alternative trail. Visitors who do not want to climb can still use the renewed viewpoint path from the gazebo above the Souš quarter, with stairs and a wooden lookout platform.
Equipment and safety
Entry is at your own risk. Every climber needs certified via ferrata equipment:
- via ferrata set with energy absorber
- climbing harness
- helmet
- firm mountain or approach shoes
- gloves are useful on the steel cable
Do not climb in rain, storms, snow, ice or poor visibility. The D and E routes are for experienced climbers; beginners should stay on the easier variants or climb with a capable partner.
Admission
The via ferrata is free to use. If you need equipment, contact the site operator or local climbing groups before you go.
Viewpoint
A newer photo point near the ferrata frames Hněvín Castle and Lake Most, making the area worthwhile even for companions who prefer the lookout to the cable.
