Via Ferrata Poustevna

Via Ferrata Poustevna is a compact but surprisingly technical via ferrata on the left bank of the Elbe, near Mírkov by Ústí nad Labem. The rock wall is only about 7 metres high, yet the hardest line reaches difficulty C, so this is not just a gentle playground. The route was built in spring 2017 by experienced climber Karel Bělina, also known for the nearby Pastýřská stěna via ferrata.

Routes and climbing

For such a small rock, Poustevna offers an unusually varied set of lines. There are 13 marked routes from A to C, with the longest reaching about 50 metres. All variants meet above the rock near the stone hermitage that gives the place its name.

Right-hand section, difficulty C: the hardest option starts with an overhang right from the foot of the wall. It is the best choice if you want to test technique, body tension and strength.

Left-hand section, difficulty A-B: easier but still enjoyable lines climb the sloping rock and work well for warm-up laps or for climbers moving toward harder ferrata grades.

Above the wall is a simple rest area with benches, a fire pit and a summit logbook. From there, the view opens toward the Elbe canyon.

Nearby sights

The ferrata stands close to the former Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. Beside it, a medieval hermitage was carved into the rock, giving the whole location its Poustevna name and a slightly romantic character.

The route combines well with a walk to the ruins of Blansko Castle, about one kilometre to the north-east, or with a riverside walk along the left bank of the Elbe toward the weir and Skalka.

Practical information

The via ferrata is accessible year-round, but winter conditions depend on snow, ice and the state of the holds. Do not climb when the rock is wet; wet stone makes the route significantly harder and riskier.

Recommended equipment: via ferrata set with energy absorber and carabiners, harness, climbing helmet and grippy shoes. Children need a helmet and a via ferrata set suitable for their body weight.

Access is free. Parking is possible on a meadow about 100 metres from the ferrata toward Mírkov; there is no car park directly below the rock. By public transport, take a bus to Mírkov from Ústí nad Labem and continue on foot.
