Fichtelberg Cable Car

The Fichtelberg Cable Car links the spa town of Kurort Oberwiesenthal with the summit of Fichtelberg, Saxony's highest mountain. The cable car is one of the town's landmarks: it was built in 1924 and official sources describe it as Germany's oldest cable suspension railway. From the valley station it covers 1,175 m, climbs 303 m, and gives a short but memorable view over Oberwiesenthal, the valley, and the ski jumps.

Ride

The cable car is both a year-round attraction and a practical way to reach Fichtelberg. The official page lists cabins for 40 passengers, two gondolas in shuttle operation, and a journey time of about 3.54 minutes. The FSB history page adds that the maiden trip with 12 passengers took place on 22 December 1924, after four months of construction. After major renewals in 2012 and 2021, the line continues to take visitors to the summit daily, outside scheduled maintenance periods and unsuitable weather.

Admission

The prices below are taken from the official fare table available in May 2026. Always check the current summer or winter tariff with the operator before travelling.

Family tickets are also available, and group rates are available on request. According to the operator, dogs, pushchairs, and bicycles are carried free of charge.

Practical Information

Regular operation is listed daily from 09:00 to 17:00, with shuttle service about every 15 minutes or as needed. Operations may be suspended during thunderstorms or strong wind. For 2026, the operator lists spring maintenance from 13 April to 30 April 2026 and autumn maintenance from 2 November to 17 November 2026, with no cable-car service during those periods. The operator states that passengers can ride barrier-free; after the major renovation, the valley station gained accessible access from the car park.
