Goethova vyhlídka Lookout Tower

Goethova vyhlídka · Goethova vyhlídka, 360 01 Karlovy Vary

Goethova vyhlídka is the oldest and highest lookout tower in Karlovy Vary. It stands on Výšina věčného života in the spa forests east of the town centre, combining excursion architecture, views and walking routes above the city. The Neo-Gothic building was designed by the Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer and built in 1888-1889 as an elegant excursion restaurant with a lookout tower.

The idea for the building came from Princess Stephanie, wife of Austrian Crown Prince Rudolf, after she was impressed by the views from this spot. The tower opened on 21 July 1889 and changed names several times over the following decades. Since 1957 it has carried the name Goethova vyhlídka after Johann Wolfgang Goethe, who walked in the Karlovy Vary area and pursued his interest in natural sciences here.

What to Expect

The lookout tower has 165 steps and a viewing platform about 23.6 metres high. From the top, views open over Karlovy Vary, the Ore Mountains, the Slavkov Forest and the Doupov Mountains. A café operates in the building, so the place works well as a reward after the forest climb. The surrounding area adds smaller stops too: a trail of spooky figures, a geological walk, the GOEtrail mountain-bike route and picnic/fire spots.

Practical Information

From the centre of Karlovy Vary, you can climb from Vřídlo along the yellow hiking trail via Na Vyhlídce street and the Tři kříže viewpoint. A shorter approach leads from the Hůrky public-transport stop along Gogolova stezka. Parking at the tower is limited and informal, so in season it is better to plan on walking or taking the bus. Opening hours change by season; check the current schedule before a dedicated trip.
