Castle and Chateau Libá (Liebenstein)

Hrad a zámek Libá · Libá 9, 351 31 Libá

Castle and Chateau Libá, historically Liebenstein, stands on a raised spur above the Libský stream just 1.5 km from the German border. The Gothic stronghold grew here in the mid-13th century as the seat of the Lords of Liebenstein, ministerials serving the imperial palatinate in Cheb. Today the site feels like a layered frontier residence: part medieval fortress, part Baroque chateau, and part long-running restoration story.

History

The first written record dates from 1264, when Libá already ranked among the important noble seats of the Cheb region. In 1346 King John of Luxembourg granted the rebuilt castle to the Cheb burgher Franz Gosswein. The castle later gained a rough reputation: in 1509 the townspeople of Cheb had to besiege it themselves after its lord turned it into a base for raids on merchant caravans.

The greatest destruction came in 1647 during the Thirty Years' War, when Swedish troops under Wrangel and Wittenberg devastated the castle. After the war the estate passed to the Zedwitz family, who restored it in 1719 and reshaped it as a comfortable Baroque residence. Around 1770 the chateau received Rococo touches, and the interiors were altered again in the 19th century.

After the Second World War the chateau was confiscated and fell into long decline. A private owner bought it in 1991 with plans to convert it into a hotel, and the restoration took more than two decades. In 2014 the complex finally reopened to visitors.

Architecture and tours

The oldest landmark is the cylindrical Romanesque-Gothic bergfried, a 21 m defensive tower with a diameter of about 7 m. The main chateau building wraps around this older tower on an irregular quadrangular plan. Look for the Zedwitz coat of arms on the eastern facade, period tiled stoves, stucco decoration and Renaissance architectural details inside.

The core visitor route is the Běh času exhibition, which follows the building from its medieval foundations through Baroque rebuilding to modern reconstruction. Guided tours last about 50 minutes and are the best way to read the many layers of the site.

The castle and chateau has been protected as a Czech cultural monument since 3 May 1958.

Practical information

The complex is privately owned and some rooms remain inaccessible while restoration continues. Visits are by guided tour only. In summer, the chateau is usually open on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday in morning and afternoon blocks, roughly 10:00-12:00 and 14:00-16:00. Check the current schedule before travelling.

Parking is available on the square in the centre of Libá, less than 300 m from the castle. Libá also has a restaurant and the Pension Liebenstein for overnight stays.
