Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary on Mědník

Kaple Neposkvrněného početí Panny Marie na Mědníku · Mědník, 431 84 Měděnec

The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary stands on the summit of Mědník above Měděnec at about 910 metres above sea level. This small circular Baroque building is a clear landmark of the Ore Mountains mining landscape. From the open hilltop, slopes drop away into the valley and it is easy to see how closely sacred places, ore mining and everyday mountain life once belonged together.

Julius Francis of Saxe-Lauenburg had the chapel built in 1672 as a thanksgiving for the income from the local mines. Its position was chosen with care: Mědník was one of the important mining sites around Měděnec, and traces of mining still surround it, including the accessible Marie Pomocná Adit. The chapel is therefore more than a solitary religious building; it is part of a wider story of ores, faith, work and the region's mining heritage.

Architecture and Setting

The chapel is built of plastered quarry stone on a circular plan and covered with a conical roof topped by a Latin cross. Semicircular windows with stone surrounds cut into the walls, while a stone portal marks the entrance. Inside, the space has a hexagonal plan and a dome. In its simple mountain form, the chapel combines Baroque symbolism with the restrained character of the high Ore Mountains.

Practical Information

The chapel is reached on foot from Měděnec or from the Mědník restaurant area. It pairs naturally with the Marie Pomocná Adit, Koňská jáma and the views from Mědník. The exterior is freely accessible; access to the interior depends on local events, maintenance and current conditions. The summit can be windy, with ice in winter, so sturdy shoes are useful.
