Katova ulička in Kadaň

Katova ulička in Kadaň is one of the best-known small monuments in the historic centre. From Mírové náměstí it runs as a narrow passage between burgher houses No. 76 and 77 toward the outer line of the town fortifications. At its narrowest point it measures only 66 centimetres and is about 50 metres long, which is why it is known as the narrowest named street in the Czech Republic.

The alley is more than a quick photo curiosity. Its story is tied to the fortifications of the royal town and to the social history of medieval Kadaň. Walking from the square, you emerge at the executioner's small yard, part of the outer defensive zone. The passage is closed by Katova branka, the Executioner's Gate, with two small wall turrets. In the past, the town executioner used this route to reach the square; like the knacker, he belonged to the so-called unclean trades. The alley also served as a drain, a fast connection between square and walls, and an emergency entrance when the main town gates were closed.

What to See

The strongest impression is the contrast. In just a few steps you leave the broad Mírové náměstí and enter a tight stone corridor leading to the walls. From the outer fortifications you can continue to the Minorite Bastion, the Militaria Museum, the barbican of the Žatec Gate or Kadaň Castle. Katova ulička works best as part of a walking circuit through the historic centre, rather than as an isolated stop for a few seconds.

Legends and History

A local legend connects the place with a blasphemous nun from the Magdalene convent at Želina, who was supposedly walled up in Katova ulička as punishment. The story gives the alley a darker atmosphere, but its real history is mainly practical: in a tight medieval town it provided controlled passage, water drainage and quick movement between the square and the fortifications.

Practical Information

The alley is freely accessible during a walk through central Kadaň. Because the passage is so narrow, it is best to wait until the other end is clear and let people coming the opposite way pass. The stop combines easily with the town hall tower, the Franciscan monastery, the castle and the Maxipes Fík riverside.
