Klínovec Lookout Tower

Rozhledna Klínovec · Klínovec, 431 91 Loučná pod Klínovcem, Karlovarský kraj, Česko

Klínovec Lookout Tower stands on the highest point of the Ore Mountains and is one of those places where the whole region suddenly makes sense. From the gallery you can read the ridge towards Boží Dar and Fichtelberg, the open Saxon side and the deeper Czech landscape with the Doupov Mountains and the Slavkov Forest. It is not a long visit, but it is a powerful orientation stop: after the climb, Boží Dar, Jáchymov, Oberwiesenthal and the whole high ridge fall into place.

Visit

The present lookout tower is an octagonal stone tower from 1884, originally named after Emperor Franz Joseph. After decades of decline, it was fully restored in 2012-2013 and reopened on 28 October 2013. The tower is 17 m high; the viewing platform is about 14 m above ground and is reached by 75 steps.

Treat the visit as a short but worthwhile summit highlight. It works especially well with a walk from Boží Dar, a chairlift ride from the Jáchymov side, a stop at the ski area or a cross-border trip towards Fichtelberg. The ground floor usually includes a small exhibition about the tower's history and the webcams on the gallery.

Practical information

Opening hours are listed as 9:00-17:00 in April, 9:00-19:00 from May to September, and 9:00-17:00 in October. In winter, follow the operator's current announcements; summit parking fees are charged only in the winter season.

Klínovec rises to 1,244 m above sea level, so even in summer expect wind, fog and fast-changing weather. You can reach the summit by car, on marked hiking trails from Boží Dar or Jáchymov, or by using the ski-area lift. The view is strongest in clear weather, when Děčínský Sněžník, the České středohoří, the Doupov Mountains and the Slavkov Forest can come into view.

Directions and contacts

The tower stands on the Klínovec summit, about 4 km from Boží Dar. The simplest navigation point is Klínovec summit / Klínovec lookout tower near the upper part of the ski area. From Boží Dar it is a natural walking or cycling trip; from Jáchymov and Loučná pod Klínovcem expect more elevation gain or use the lift.
