Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Mariánské Lázně)

Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie · Goethovo náměstí 110/31, 353 01 Mariánské Lázně

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary dominates Goethovo náměstí in Mariánské Lázně and is one of the most distinctive sacred buildings in the Karlovy Vary Region. Built in 1844-1848 in a historicising Neo-Byzantine style, it replaced an older stone chapel from 1820 that had become too small for the growing number of pilgrims and spa guests. The result is a rare church that blends Eastern and Western Christian motifs in a way few Czech buildings do.

Architecture

The design came from the Bavarian architect Johann Gottfried Gutensohn of Munich. Construction was led by Anton Thurner, architect of the Premonstratensian monastery at Teplá, with work also involving the Prague builder and sculptor Josef Kranner.

The church stands on an octagonal ground plan, symbolising the meeting of Eastern and Western Christian traditions. Its facade has two clock towers, a large tracery window with stained glass of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ by Josef Kranner, and recessed pillars with angel sculptures that visually lighten the mass of the building.

A flight of 33 steps leads up to the church, traditionally read as a reference to the years of Christ's earthly life.

Interior

Inside, the first impression is the spacious nave with its deep blue vault sprinkled with golden stars, like a night sky above the spa town. Massive columns and eight chapels divided by arcades create a calm, ceremonial rhythm. In the floor, a geometric pattern forms the letter M in reference to Mary.

The main altar has a wooden structure and an altarpiece of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary by the Viennese painter Carl von Hampel. Sculptural decoration by Josef Max includes angels on the main altar, baptismal symbols and statues on the side altars. Also look for the altar of Our Lady of Częstochowa with a wood carving of the enthroned Mother of God, the Stations of the Cross by Josef Mathauser from 1887 and works by Gustav Kratzmann.

Organ and spa-town setting

The organ from 1848, built by Jan Ferdinand Guth, has 2,800 pipes and belongs among the valuable historic instruments of the region. It is still used during liturgy and classical-music concerts in the spa season.

Mariánské Lázně is part of the UNESCO-listed Great Spa Towns of Europe, together with Karlovy Vary and Františkovy Lázně. The church contributes to the historic character of the spa centre and pairs naturally with a walk to the colonnade, parks and Singing Fountain.

Practical information

The church is usually open to the public on Saturday and Sunday from 14:30 to 16:30 and at least 45 minutes before each Mass. Admission is free. Services are held on Sunday at 10:15 and 17:15, Tuesday and Thursday at 9:45, and Wednesday and Friday at 17:15.
