Church of St Michael the Archangel and Our Lady the Faithful
Kostel sv. Michaela Archanděla a Panny Marie Věrné · Malé náměstí 25, 363 01 Ostrov nad Ohří
The Church of St Michael the Archangel and Our Lady the Faithful rises on Malé náměstí in the old centre of Ostrov nad Ohří. It is one of the Karlovy Vary Region's important sacred monuments, with roots reaching back to the late 13th century and a first written record from 1384. Over more than seven centuries it gathered Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque layers - and since 2011 it has also held a rare relic of Pope John Paul II.
History and Architecture
The church was originally dedicated to St Nicholas and served the newly developing town of Ostrov, historically known in German as Schlackenwerth. A destructive fire in 1567 led to a major Renaissance rebuilding in 1568-1572. The result was a three-aisled hall church with galleries, typical of the Saxon sacred architecture that spread through the Ore Mountains region: broad, bright and spacious, with nave and side aisles of nearly equal height.
Baroque work in the 18th century brought much of the church's representative furnishing. The main altar from 1752 was made by the sculptors J. J. Bayer, J. Berl and Karel Legát. In the same year, organ builder Johann Leopold Rausch created a new organ, later fitted with pneumatic action in 1941. The presbytery carries a star-shaped net vault, while the baptismal chapel has a diamond vault.
The square tower with a Baroque cornice and octagonal upper section forms a clear landmark on the square. After a period of decline in the 20th century, the church was comprehensively restored in 1989-1991. In 1995 its dedication was expanded to include Our Lady the Faithful, and the church took on a stronger pilgrimage role.
Relic of John Paul II
The church's most unusual spiritual treasure is a reliquary with a drop of blood of Pope John Paul II, kept here since October 2011. It contains a small piece of the pope's liturgical vestment with his blood and has made the parish church a destination for pilgrims from Czechia and abroad.
Interior, Bells and Memorials
The interior preserves Renaissance tombstones and epitaphs of noble families. The most valuable is the Schlik epitaph from 1521, a stone relief linked with one of the most influential families of the Ore Mountains mining region. The Schliks controlled silver mines in Jáchymov and are connected with the joachimsthaler, the ancestor of the dollar.
The bell set includes a historic bell from 1673 and four younger bells cast in 1923. The 1752 organ is still functional and can be heard during services.
Visiting
The church is primarily open during regular services: Sunday at 9:00 and Tuesday-Friday at 18:00. Outside service times, the interior opens occasionally for visitors, especially in summer and during cultural events such as Night of Churches. Check access in advance with the parish or Ostrov tourist information centre.
Admission is free; voluntary contributions help with maintenance.
