Kozelka Climbing Area

Kozelka is a prominent West Bohemian climbing area on a wooded volcanic hill near Doubravice and Nečtiny. For hikers it is a table mountain and nature reserve; for climbers it is a large set of rock sectors in volcanic tuff. Kozelka belongs to the Plzeň-North climbing area and includes a wide range of towers, walls and sectors of different lengths and character.

Climbing at Kozelka has its own specifics. The rock is not sandstone, but volcanic tuff with trachybasalt formations, so both the climbing style and protection differ from classic sandstone areas. Nuts and cams are not allowed in the sector; additional protection may be placed only with slings. Part of the rocks lies inside the Kozelka Nature Reserve, and all climbing must respect the local rules and nature protection.

Climbing and Sectors

The area consists of many smaller and more distinctive walls and towers. Among the named sectors are Myší díra, Vlčí zub, Stěny, Březová věž, Kobyla, Kukačka, Převislá, Nečtinská jehla, Doubravická stěna and Vyhlídková skála. The routes are varied, from short practice lines to walls around twenty metres high. The place is best suited to experienced climbers who can work with local rules and protect themselves in line with the climbing regulations.

Climbing is allowed year-round, except in winter conditions and in unsuitable hard-soled footwear. First ascents are possible only with the consent of the area manager. Camping and lighting fires outside the designated campsite are also prohibited.

Practical Information

Access from Plzeň is via Manětín and Nečtiny, with a turn before Nečtiny toward Nová Doubravice. Parking is at the lower edge of the village; from there it is roughly one kilometre on foot to the rocks. For planning specific routes, use the current ČHS database and respect any nesting or nature-protection restrictions.
