Lake Medard
Jezero Medard · Jezero Medard, Svatava / Habartov, 356 01 Sokolov
Lake Medard, often nicknamed the Sokolov Sea, is a large reclamation lake northwest of Sokolov, between Svatava, Habartov, Bukovany and Citice. It was created by flooding the residual pit of the former Medard and Libík brown-coal mines, where mining ended in 2000. Today it is one of the clearest examples of how the Sokolov mining landscape is being transformed.
According to the Sokolov-East microregion, the lake lies partly in the cadastral area of Svatava and partly in Habartov. Its story is also a textbook case of technical reclamation: after mining stopped, the banks and lake bed had to be reshaped, acidic mine waters had to be managed, and the huge pit was gradually filled with water from the Ohře River. Geopark Egeria states that the final water level at 400 metres above sea level was reached in 2016.
What to Experience
Medard is impressive mainly because of its scale. The water surface covers roughly 500 hectares, stretches for several kilometres and has a shoreline of about 12 kilometres. From the surrounding paths there are wide views across the water, new banks, young reclamation vegetation and a former industrial landscape that is slowly turning into a natural and recreational area.
The lake works well for a walk, a cycling stop or landscape photography. It still feels rawer than a classic holiday reservoir, and that is part of its appeal: visitors can see a landscape in transition, from mining to a new post-industrial environment. Current development plans include a multifunctional trail and further visitor infrastructure around the water.
Practical Information
Medard is not a standard bathing lake or a finished leisure resort. Regional reports have noted that bathing restrictions still apply, so visitors should respect the current rules of the owner and signs in the area. Plan the visit mainly as a walk, viewpoint stop, cycling trip or landscape observation rather than as a guaranteed beach day.
Some paths may be dusty, unfinished or temporarily restricted depending on ongoing development work. Sturdier shoes and an up-to-date map are useful.
