Mayer's Gloriette

Mayerův gloriet · Pod Jelením skokem, 360 01 Karlovy Vary

Mayer's Gloriette is one of the small but charming places in the spa forests above the centre of Karlovy Vary. The wooden lookout pavilion stands around Jelení skok and Petrova výšina, where the historic spa landscape quickly changes from colonnade bustle into quiet woodland paths. It suits a short walk from the centre, and it also works as a gentle stop on a longer loop towards Diana.

The gloriette was built in 1804 and is associated with Mayer, a Karlovy Vary native and Viennese merchant whose name the structure still bears. Unlike the city's larger lookout towers, it does not aim for monumentality. Its value lies in its atmosphere, scale and setting on the wooded slope above the town. It recalls the older spa tradition of walking out for views, rest and clean air.

A Viewpoint Above the Spa Centre

The position near Jelení skok is very typical of Karlovy Vary. You are only a short distance from the lively area around the Vřídlo Hot Spring, yet within minutes the path feels high above the town. Forest paths, stone steps and viewpoints create a dense network of short routes, so Mayer's Gloriette is not an isolated target but a natural part of a walk linking the centre, Jelení skok, Petrova výšina and the way towards Diana.

From the pavilion and the nearby paths, views open down to the spa centre in the Teplá valley. Other well-known stops lie close by: the Jelení skok viewpoint with the chamois statue, Petrova výšina and the route to the Diana funicular. This concentration of small destinations makes the area around Mayer's Gloriette one of the most rewarding short walks in Karlovy Vary.

You can climb directly from Vřídlo, a shorter but steeper option above the spa centre. A gentler variant is to use the Diana funicular and get off at the Jelení skok intermediate station, then continue along the forest paths. Both approaches make sense depending on time, fitness and the direction of your walk.

Practical Information

Mayer's Gloriette is mainly a lookout and resting point. Expect a small historic structure, forest quiet, glimpsed views between trees and easy access to nearby sights. It is not a place for a long visit; its charm is in the pause itself. It lets the landscape, paths and view do the work.

For visitors to Karlovy Vary, it is a good choice when you want to leave the colonnades without planning a demanding hike. The walk reveals another face of the spa town: Karlovy Vary surrounded by forests, viewpoints and modest historic garden architecture. It suits couples, solo walkers and families with older children who can manage a short climb. In winter or after rain, wear shoes with a good grip, as woodland slopes and steps can be slippery.

Together with Jelení skok and Petrova výšina, Mayer's Gloriette forms a compact walking target above the spa centre. You can continue towards Diana or return downhill to Vřídlo. The best way to experience it is slowly: notice the town changing below the slope, stop briefly in the pavilion and let the historic spa landscape breathe.
