Kraslice Municipal Slaughterhouse
Městská jatka Kraslice · U elektrárny 1928, 358 01 Kraslice
The former municipal slaughterhouse in Kraslice is one of the most valuable pieces of industrial architecture in the Ore Mountains region. Designed in a German modernist spirit with strong Art Nouveau details, the complex is unusually intact for its type and still carries the atmosphere of early 20th-century municipal engineering.
It is not a classic museum with daily tours. Its appeal lies in the preserved exterior, the surviving technology and the way a utilitarian building was given almost ceremonial architectural care.
History
The complex was built in 1903-1904 on the site of an older municipal laundry that had burned down. The project was designed by Anton Möller, a prolific architect from Varnsdorf who created around two dozen similar facilities across Austria-Hungary. The Kraslice example is considered one of the best preserved from this group.
Construction was carried out by local builder Anton Gerstner, while the technical equipment came from Prague's Rustonka works. Kraslice's relatively isolated position helped the site survive without the heavy alterations that damaged many comparable buildings elsewhere.
Architecture and machinery
The complex is arranged around a central production area. It includes the main building with two slaughter halls, auxiliary service structures, staff facilities and a residential house.
The visual landmark is a 25-metre conical, two-storey tower with a pyramidal roof. It served as the evaporator tower for the cooling system. Brick walls and finely shaped Art Nouveau details give the complex an unexpectedly elegant face for an industrial site.
Inside the machine room, part of the original technology survives. The cooling system included a horizontal single-cylinder compressor, first driven by a large steam engine and later replaced by a Siemens electric motor in the 1930s. Equipment from Siemens and Škoda remains part of the site's industrial memory.
The ice-making system served the slaughterhouse itself and supplied ice to nearby pubs and shops.
Present use
The area has been protected as a cultural monument since 2004, apart from the later transformer station. After years of decline, private restoration gradually returned life to the complex. Today it combines commercial use, including a building-materials shop and a restaurant, with the preserved character of an industrial heritage site.
The machine room is opened to the public only occasionally, usually during cultural events, so it is worth checking the current programme before planning an interior visit.
Practical information
The exterior can be viewed from the street around U elektrárny on the southern edge of Kraslice. Interior access is occasional and depends on events or private arrangements. Treat the site as a working private complex with heritage value, not as a fully staffed visitor attraction.
