SOOS National Nature Reserve

Národní přírodní rezervace Soos · Kateřina 39, 351 34 Skalná

SOOS National Nature Reserve lies by Kateřina and Skalná, about six kilometres northeast of Františkovy Lázně. It is one of the most distinctive natural sites in the Cheb area: peat bogs, fens, mineral springs, mofettes and pale diatomite layers meet in a compact landscape that can feel almost lunar in places. The reserve has been protected since 1964 and preserves wetland and salt-loving habitats as well as rare geological features shaped by carbon dioxide springs and mineral water.

The visitor route opens only a selected part of SOOS. The most sensitive habitats remain outside normal access, so it is important to stay on marked paths and boardwalks. The nature trail follows the floor of a former saline lake that gradually became peat bog and mineral salt marsh. The classic sights are bubbling mofettes, where carbon dioxide escapes from the ground, and mineral springs such as Císařský pramen.

Nature Trail and Visitor Area

The main experience is an easy walk on wooden boardwalks and interpretive panels. The accessible route is about 1.2 km long. The ground is flat and not physically demanding, but the open wetland, damp sections and bright diatomite surface can feel exposed on hot days.

The area also includes exhibitions on the nature of SOOS and the Cheb region, a geopark, the Bird World of Cheb exhibition, a palaeontology section with prehistoric animal models and an animal rescue station. That makes SOOS a good stop for families, geology fans and anyone who wants to see how the West Bohemian spa landscape is shaped by water, gas and minerals.
