Popovská hora

Popovská hora · Mariánská, 362 51 Jáchymov

Popovská hora is a striking basalt hill in the Ore Mountains, rising to 901 m above the former mining settlement of Mariánská and the vanished village of Popov, historically Pfaffengrün. Thanks to its isolated position southwest of Jáchymov, it offers one of the most rewarding panoramas in the Jáchymov part of the Ore Mountains.

At the highest point of the ridge stands the sharp basalt outcrop known as Habartova skála, together with the remains of a wooden cross. The last climb is short but steep, which makes the summit feel more dramatic than the distance on the map suggests.

Geology and views

Popovská hora is formed by volcanic rock of basalt type. Near the top you can see signs of columnar basalt jointing, where cooling lava breaks into regular columns. It is a compact but memorable geology stop, especially if you enjoy reading the landscape under your feet.

The summit opens a broad, almost circular view. To the north are the Ore Mountains and Klínovec, to the south the Doupov Mountains, to the west the Karlovy Vary basin, and to the east the Teplá Highlands. In clear weather the place feels much bigger than its modest summit area.

Popov and the mining landscape

The southern slopes look down toward the site of Popov (Pfaffengrün), a village first recorded in the 13th century as property of Teplá Monastery. Around 1890 it had about one hundred inhabitants, mostly German-speaking, and was locally known for goat cheese. After the expulsion of the German population after the Second World War, the village disappeared. Foundations and remnants of a small chapel can still be found in the terrain.

The wider area carries the strong imprint of Jáchymov's mining past. Silver ore from St Joachimsthal gave its name to the thaler, the ancestor of the word dollar; later, uranium mining marked the region in a much darker way. The Jáchymov and Abertamy mining landscape forms part of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region, a UNESCO World Heritage property since 2019.

Routes to the summit

From Mariánská - shortest route, about 1.5 km

From the bus stop in Mariánská, follow Kapitána Nálepky street to its end, then bear slightly right along a meadow track. At the forest edge a trodden path turns left and reaches the summit after roughly 100 metres. The final section to the cross is steep.

From Havlovka - 4.3 km loop

A popular option starts near the Havlovka restaurant and crosses meadows around Čimický vrch. Most of the route is easy and suitable for families, apart from the final summit push.

From Jáchymov - about 3 km

Follow the green-marked hiking trail toward Popov; after roughly 2 km, a forest path branches off toward the top.
