Ostrov Sacred Precinct

Posvátný okrsek Ostrov · Klášterní 141/D, 363 01 Ostrov

Ostrov Sacred Precinct stands on the western edge of the historic centre of Ostrov and belongs among the most important Baroque monuments in the Karlovy Vary Region. Its story began in 1644, when Duke Julius Henry of Saxe-Lauenburg laid the foundation stone for a family mausoleum. Today the restored precinct brings together five sacred buildings, the former Piarist convent and an ornamental garden, making it one of the most rewarding heritage stops between Karlovy Vary and the Ore Mountains.

After decades of decline and military use, the complex was extensively restored between 2001 and 2007. The result is not a frozen monument, but a compact sacred landscape where architecture, memory and contemporary interpretation meet.

What to See

The heart of the ensemble is the octagonal Burial Chapel of St Anne (1644-1663), the oldest early Baroque central-plan building in Bohemia. Its crypt contains a lapidarium with stone fragments from Ostrov and the surrounding area. A recent restoration returned the interior to a pale grey-white colour scheme and added new windows with light film.

The chapel also hosts the 360-degree videomapping Carpe diem - Memento mori. The roughly 20-minute projection fills the space with images of transience, memory and the cycle of the seasons, giving the mausoleum an unusually atmospheric layer.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, consecrated in 1674 and designed by Martin Reiner, now presents an exhibition of church art from the western Ore Mountains. The Chapel of St Florian was built after a castle fire and is used as a place of remembrance for victims of violence. The Chapel of Our Lady of Einsiedeln is a free Baroque echo of the famous Swiss pilgrimage chapel. The former Piarist convent, once connected with a Latin school, completes the precinct.
