Michal Natural Swimming Area

Michal Natural Swimming Area, often nicknamed the "Sokolov Sea", is one of the largest summer water sites in the Karlovy Vary Region. The lake was created by reclaiming a former brown-coal quarry, and today it offers more than 30 hectares of water, a sandy beach over 500 metres long and enough space for a full family day out.

The setting is part of its appeal. What was once an industrial extraction landscape has become a recreational lake with clean natural water, beach facilities, sports areas and a camp next door. For visitors travelling between Karlovy Vary, Sokolov and Cheb, Michal is an easy warm-weather stop.

Attractions and Activities

The sandy beach has a gradual entry into the water, which makes it popular with families and less confident swimmers. In season the area usually offers a three-lane water slide, a large water slide, a floating "iceberg", water trampoline, pedal-boat rental, beach volleyball and play features for children.

The beach area also has food stands and restaurants. The neighbouring Michal campsite offers cabins, tent pitches and caravan space, so the lake can work as either a day trip or a simple summer base.

Admission

Afternoon tickets after 16:00 are cheaper. Parking is paid separately; the guarded car park uses an automatic barrier and licence-plate recognition.

The lake lies by the Karlovy Vary-Cheb road near Sokolov. It is easiest by car, but it also works well as a cycling stop in the Sokolov area.
