Velký Rybník Recreation Area
Rekreační oblast Velký Rybník · Velký Rybník, 362 33 Hroznětín
Velký Rybník Recreation Area is a classic summer escape above the Karlovy Vary basin: a cottage settlement, a natural pond, small refreshments and views toward the Ore Mountains ridges. It lies at about 470 metres above sea level, roughly 2 km from Hroznětín and 8 km from Karlovy Vary, so it works both as a half-day swim and as a quieter base for a longer stay.
The settlement has more than 600 cottages and holiday houses, and in summer it draws families, recreational athletes, anglers and walkers. The mood is informal rather than resort-like: water, forest edges, simple services and plenty of room to slow down.
Swimming and Facilities
The main swimming spot is a natural pond with a sandy beach and a gradual entry into the water, which makes it comfortable for children and casual swimmers. Nearby you will find restaurants and snack stands with outdoor seating, a volleyball court and parking. Camping and cottage accommodation are available close to the water.
As with most natural swimming places, water quality can vary during the season. Later in summer, many locals prefer the flooded quarries beyond the cottage area.
Flooded Quarries
About 1.5 km from the settlement are flooded quarries left after basalt, uranium ore and kaolin extraction. They are a favourite summer tip for clearer water and a wilder setting. Rocky edges and spontaneous greenery give the quarries a more romantic feel than the main pond, but they also require more care. Wear shoes suitable for rock and enter the water sensibly.
Water Sports, Fishing and Trips
The calm surface of Velký Rybník is used for windsurfing and small recreational boats, with boat rental available in the area during the season. The pond is also popular for recreational fishing.
The area is a useful starting point for trips into the central Ore Mountains. Walking routes and cycling routes connect toward Plešivec, Boží Dar and Klínovec, while gentler routes lead back toward Karlovy Vary and the Ohře corridor.
Practical Information
The beach area is freely accessible and there is no admission fee for the pond. There is no permanent lifeguard or medical service at the beach, so swimming is at your own risk. Check local conditions before relying on camping, boat rental or refreshments outside the main summer season.
