Kynžvart Chateau
Státní zámek Kynžvart · Státní zámek Kynžvart, 354 91 Lázně Kynžvart
Kynžvart Chateau is the representative seat of the Metternich family near Mariánské Lázně, on the edge of the Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area. It is one of the most important chateaux in West Bohemia and a place with a distinctly European story. Visitors come here for art, coins, weapons, rare books, incunabula, manuscripts and curiosities connected with figures of European history.
The chateau developed in the valley below the older Kynžvart castle sometime between 1585 and 1597. In the 17th century the estate passed to the Metternich family, who first created a Baroque residence here. Its greatest transformation came in the era of Chancellor Klemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich. Between 1820 and 1839, the older chateau was rebuilt in Viennese Neoclassical style by architect Pietro Nobile. Kynžvart became a place of representation, diplomatic meetings and private life for one of the most influential European politicians of the 19th century.
Tours and Collections
The main visitor routes present the Metternich chateau interiors and the Museum with Cabinet of Curiosities. Inside, you can see princely salons, historic furnishings and valuable works of art. The museum and cabinet of curiosities rank among the oldest private museums in the world and grew from the collections of Chancellor Metternich and his descendants. The experience also includes the library, collections of coins, manuscripts, exotic objects and personal mementos of famous people.
The chateau is surrounded by a large English landscape park, one of the biggest chateau parks in the Czech Republic. It covers 293 hectares and can be visited separately throughout the year. Visitors interested in landscape composition can also choose the guided route Under the Tree Crowns.
