Underground of St Mary Magdalene Church

The Underground of St Mary Magdalene Church opens the crypt and the technically intriguing foundations of the High Baroque church in the heart of Karlovy Vary's spa centre, just a short walk from the Hot Spring. The tour adds a less visible layer to a visit to the famous church: earlier building history, a burial space and Karlovy Vary mineral deposits used in sacred decoration.

Inside the underground area you can see the Holy Sepulchre altar made with sinter and pea-stone deposits, biblical scenes of the Garden of Gethsemane and Calvary, an ossuary with skeletal remains, an example of the clever foundations of the Baroque structure and a 15th-century path. The tour is short and focused, making it a good intimate stop while walking between the Hot Spring Colonnade, Market Colonnade and the historic centre.

Tours

The underground tour lasts about 30 minutes and entry is possible only with a guide. Tours run from May to October; in the 2026 season the excursion routes open on Friday, 1 May.

Tickets can be bought online or at the excursion ticket office on the 1st floor of the Thermal Spring Colonnade at Divadelní náměstí. Foreign-language tours must be booked by phone, email or in person at the ticket office.

Admission

Price list for the Czech-language tour valid from May to October 2026:

Children under 6 enter free when accompanied by a paying adult. Reduced admission includes, among others, students with an ISIC card, seniors over 60, SeniorPas holders, TP, ZTP and ZTP/P card holders and accompanying teachers.

Practical Information

The maximum capacity of one tour is 20 people, including children, and at least 4 paying visitors are required for a tour to take place. Animals are not allowed in the tour areas. Non-commercial photography is included in the admission price.
