Wildpark Waschleithe
Natur- und Wildpark Waschleithe · Wildpark Waschleithe, 08340 Grünhain-Beierfeld, Germany
Wildpark Waschleithe lies in the romantic Oswaldtal valley near Schwarzenberg on the Saxon side of the Erzgebirge. Opened in 1971, it has grown to cover 5.4 hectares with over 250 animals in forty species – while retaining an informal, family-friendly character and some of the lowest admission prices in the region. It is the kind of park you come back to.
The backbone is native woodland wildlife: red deer, reindeer and otters roam spacious, naturally designed enclosures. Alongside them, a collection of rare heritage breeds provides a pleasant surprise: Sattelschwein saddle pigs, Zackelschaf sheep with dramatically spiralled horns, and woolly Waldschafe seldom seen elsewhere. For children, the Streichelgehege petting area – with supervised direct animal contact – is the undisputed highlight.
What to See
The park offers more than enclosures. On site you will find a natural history exhibition with a multimedia room – a good stop on a rainy afternoon –, a treetop viewing platform with a panorama over the Westerzgebirge, and a cold-water aquarium with local freshwater fish. Guided tours and activity programmes run throughout the season.
