Chyše Chateau

Zámek Chyše · Chyše 30, 364 53 Chyše

Chyše Chateau is one of the most distinctive aristocratic residences in the western part of the Karlovy Vary Region. It stands above the small town of Chyše, and its documented history reaches back to 1158. Over the centuries it evolved from a Gothic castle through Renaissance and Baroque chateau phases to alterations in the English Gothic style in the mid-19th century. This mix of layers gives Chyše its particular atmosphere: it is not a sterile representative monument, but a living residence with interiors, the story of the Lažanský family, the literary trace of Karel Čapek and a neighbouring chateau brewery.

Tours

The basic tour route leads through the representative and residential parts of the chateau. Visitors see Baroque halls, the dining room, the estate owners' residence, the chateau library, the cavalier room, Karel Čapek's room and a collection of hunting trophies. One of the most valuable features is a ceiling oil painting by Petr Brandl from 1699. The exhibition dedicated to Karel Čapek and West Bohemia has its own appeal; Čapek stayed in Chyše in 1917 with the family of Count Vladimír Lažanský, and the stay later found its way into his literary world.

Practical Information

In the main season, the chateau is open from April to October. In July and August, it is usually open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. The last tour starts one hour before closing. Outside the seasonal schedule, group visits can be arranged.
