Rýzmburk Castle Ruin

Rýzmburk, sometimes also known as Hrad Osek, is a massive castle ruin on a wooded rocky spur above the town of Osek. It is one of the largest castle complexes in Bohemia, and even in its ruined state it still shows the power of the Hrabišic family, which helped shape north-west Bohemia in the 13th century. The first written mention dates to 1250, and building research has confirmed that one of the towers was already under construction in the winter of 1248/1249.

The castle guarded an important route from Bohemia to Saxony and made excellent use of its terrain. A stream protects the rocky spur from the east and north, while medieval builders added massive walls, towers and a complex layout. The highest part held the castle core with residential towers and a chapel, joined by a large fortified area. Rýzmburk was in use for roughly 250 years, from the mid-13th century to the early 16th century, shifting from a representative seat to an administrative stronghold and finally to an abandoned castle.

What to See

Today Rýzmburk is a romantic forest ruin with strong remains of walls, towers and masonry fragments. The site feels less like a small ruin and more like a broad stone labyrinth, so it is worth slowing down and walking through the individual parts of the castle carefully. Information panels help with orientation, and the trip combines well with the Cistercian monastery in Osek, the Chapel of the Patron Saints of Bohemia, Stropník or the Rýzmburk waterfall.

Practical Information

The castle ruin is reached on foot, most often from Osek or from the Chapel of the Patron Saints of Bohemia along marked trails. The route leads through forest and over uneven ground, so sturdy shoes are useful. The ruin is freely accessible, but it is a historic structure in natural terrain: stay in safe areas and do not climb unstable masonry.
